Ceramics Workshops in Corsica – Discovering Natural Clays and Contemporary Creation or Making High-Temperature Glazes and Colored Engobes.
These workshops offer a complete immersion in ceramic practice, combining rigorous technical training, free experimentation, and the discovery of natural Corsican clays. For five days, in my studio in Calvi, Balagne, I will guide you step by step in acquiring the essential fundamentals, while inviting you to develop a personal and sensitive relationship with the clay.
Freedom in ceramics doesn't arise from chance: it is based on understanding the techniques, materials, and processes.
A teaching approach based on technical mastery and the absence of failure.
Ceramics is a demanding discipline. It requires precision, observation, and patience. This is why these workshops place a central emphasis on learning the fundamental techniques, an essential condition for steady progress. Every deformation, every crack, every piece that doesn't survive drying or firing becomes:
• a concrete learning experience,
• a deeper understanding of clay's behavior,
• a step closer to independence.
Technical Learning: The Fundamentals of Ceramic Practice
Throughout the first workshop, you will receive individualized guidance (maximum 3 to 4 people) to acquire or consolidate essential technical skills:
• clay preparation (recycling, mixing, moisture content)
• understanding different types of clay (stoneware, wild Corsican clays)
• correct techniques for hand-building
• managing thickness, tension, and joining techniques
• controlled drying and crack prevention
• identifying defects and understanding their causes
These fundamentals will allow you to solidify your creative process, gain confidence, and explore more personal forms.
Discovering Corsican Clays: Understanding the Material in its Environment
The first workshop includes an introduction to collecting and analyzing local Corsican clays. You will learn to recognize usable clay, understand its plasticity, resistance, and limitations, and adapt your technique and forms to its natural characteristics.
This approach directly connects technique to the land and allows you to grasp that each clay has its own unique language.
Creating Consciously: Between Technique, Intuition, and Experimentation
Once the basics are mastered, each workshop format allows ample time for exploring forms, seeking balance and volume, and listening to the material rather than being constrained by the desired result. Technique then becomes a tool at the service of creativity, not an end in itself. It allows you to approach ceramics with greater freedom, precision, and coherence.
Who are these ceramics workshops in Corsica for?
These workshops are for beginners eager to learn on a solid foundation, for those already familiar with ceramics who wish to refine their technique, or for artists and creators seeking to deepen their relationship with the material.
During these sessions, there is no pursuit of perfection, as true learning arises from the combination of technical rigor and a certain "letting go."
You will leave with your pieces after firing, but above all, with lasting technical knowledge and a new way of approaching ceramic creation.
And to continue: A second training session is offered, focusing on the creation of decorations, colored engobes, and high-temperature glazes in an electric kiln.
Registration is open. Feel free to ask me any questions or come directly to the workshop: Les Remparts, Rue Alsace Lorraine, 20260 Calvi. Don't forget, throughout the year you will have access to free technical sheets or e-books.
